Me and You and Everyone We Know (Miranda July, 2005)  3.5/4

“She’s the love of your life. You’re just gonna let her go?”

“No, she’s just…. going”

Love is something odd. I personally only believe it exists in the movies. How can something so powerful and true really exist? Miranda July believes in love and this translates exquisitely on screen. The first scene of the film sees Richard (John Hawkes) setting his hand on fire in order to get his sons’ attention and because he feels that there is nothing left to do but to set yourself on fire. Richard is going through a divorce and is scared to lose his sons. As they adjust to their new lifestyle, the sons discover the weirdness of the Internet, 2 sex crazed teen girls, and Richard meets Christine. Christine is an aspiring video artist who works for an elderly cab driving service. Although Christine wants to be discovered and get her work in a local art show, what she wants more than anything is to find love. Running into Richard at a store where he works as a shoe salesman, she falls in love at first site. All of these stories are played at different times in the film and in the end, all come together in the most wonderful way.

What I loved so much about this film was the way that everything felt so poetic and real. The scene where Christine and Richard walk down the sidewalk imagining they are walking through their lives together is just beautiful. They pick landmarks as years they’ve been together and how they could take a detour and stay together forever. Richard says they would have a happy 40 years together. Christine says they will die married and old. This scene really shows where the two characters are in life. Christine is dreaming of the future filled with love while Richard is wondering if love and marriage are things that are supposed to last.

Me and You and Everyone We Know is an indie for the ones who want/need/wish for love. The film is awkward and cute but that’s what makes it feel so real to the way people act when they are in love. It’s simple and different because filmmakers don’t write films as true as this. All the relationships in the film are strange but you can’t help but laugh because you’ve been (or can imagine yourself) in all of those situations.
